CSR is a major manufacturer of Building Products in Australasia, a publicly listed company on the Australian stock exchange. Other Brands by CSR include Viridian glass, Bradcore insulation, Monier and PGH bricks, Gyprock plasterboard and fibre cement, Hebel aerated concrete, Bradcore panel systems.
Concrete and terracotta roof tiles are durable, inert roofing materials recognised for their sound proof, low maintenance and long service life characteristics. They will not become porous and leak, will not crack, split, corrode or warp due to defective manufacture. Concrete and terracotta roof tiles will not be adversely affected by salt air or frost
The mass of concrete and terracotta roofing provides up to 30 Db reduction in external sound transmission. Thermal mass also helps reduce the range of diurnal temperature fluctuation. The mass of tile roofs means they perform particularly well in high and very high wind zones. The inert nature of concrete and terracotta tiles makes them well suited to New Zealand’s predominantly coastal environment. They do not contain heavy metal ions and are good to collect drinking water from. The many laps in a tile roof allow moisture vapour to escape the ceiling space producing a healthier home.
Manufactured from abundant local resources, sand, cement and clay, roof tiles are chemically inert products. Concrete tiles are manufactured under high pressure and over time, crystalline bonds continue to form in the tile causing them to strengthen for up to 100 years, hence the 50 year product warrantee. The body of the tile is the waterproof element. The colour coat is a sand/cement/oxide slurry and is decorative only. An acrylic gloss coat applied to suppress efflorescence weathers to a matt finish. The colour of Terracotta tiles is baked into the tile and guaranteed for 50 years.
Tiles reduce airborne sound transmission by 30 Db across the range of audible frequency. Tiles are incombustible and fully fire resistant. The mass of Concrete tiles is 4.6 kg to 5.2 kg. the mass of Terracotta is approximately 4kg. Average transverse breaking strength of concrete is not less than 600 newtons. Water absorption is less than 10% by weight after total immersion for 24 hours.
Renown for their low maintenance characteristics Concrete and Terracotta roofs are not degraded by the presence of moss and lichens growing on them. Concrete roofs are alkaline and this has a mildly fungicidal effect. If an owner wishes to clean the roof Monier recommend treatment with a chemical solution designed for the purpose. Application should be by a specialist trained to do this work. Enthusiastic amateurs may do substantial damage to the roof system.
