Firth Specialty Concrete

Firth has currently engaged in an environmental assessment of its products with Greenbuild. Work is in progress and results will be published shortly.

Firth Certified Concrete® has a range of Specialty Concretes:

Firth Winter Concrete™ sets in very low temperatures.

Firth Micro Silica Concrete is a high performance, very dense, strong concrete made with naturally occurring amorphous silica.

Firth Self Compacting Concrete flows into place under its own weight, without segregation or flow blockage. It will flow through congested reinforcement or complex formwork and achieve complete filling and consolidation without mechanical compaction.

Flowable Fill™ is low strength concrete slurry used as general hard fill.

Firth Thermal Bedding is a specialty solution for filling around heavy electrical conduiting.

Application/Purpose

Firth Winter Concrete™ enables effective concrete pours in cold weather.

Micro Silica Concrete performs well in aggressive environments, for example marine environments such as the Greenhithe bridge expansion and the second Tauranga harbour bridge.

Firth Self Compacting Concrete is suitable for use in pre-cast elements, where concrete needs to reach confined areas or where lots of steel reinforcement means mechanical compaction would be difficult or impossible. It also can be used for retro-strengthening existing structures.

Flowable Fill™ is a general substitute for conventional granular hard fill materials.

Firth Thermal Bedding is specifically for fill around heavy electrical conduiting.

Benefits/Advantages

Firth Winter Concrete™ eliminates delays in cold weather.

Micro Silica Concrete provides high early strengths and durability even in aggressive environments.

Firth Self Compacting Concrete reduces equipment requirements and the possibility of damage to formwork.

Flowable Fill™ enables faster backfilling, narrower service trenches, greater worker safety, less wastage and less risk of damage to pipes and service ducts. Excavation is easy with conventional equipment.

Firth Thermal Bedding shares the benefits of Flowable Fill™ but its higher strength gives greater protection to key services.

Composition

Firth Winter Concrete™ includes an admixture that accelerates setting in very low temperatures.

Micro Silica Concrete contains naturally occurring silica, 100x finer than cement, that fills the water spaces between the cement particles reducing the bleed and increasing impermeability.

Self Compacting Concrete is a carefully proportioned mix of fine and coarse aggregates, cements, fine fillers and chemical admixtures to produce a highly deformable but viscous concrete.

Flowable Fill™ is a controlled low strength mix of sand, cement, fly ash and water, forming a flowable, cohesive slurry.

Firth Thermal Bedding is a low strength bedding material with improved thermal conductivity.

Technical Properties

Firth Winter Concrete™ is available with a 28 day strength of 17.5 MPa or 20 MPa.

Micro Silica Concrete is formed when silica reacts with part of the calcium hydroxide and provides a strong chemically resistant paste. The hydrophilic nature of silica and the large surface area makes the concrete thixotropic and cohesive, the ideal state for a highly workable concrete to reduce segregation.

Self Compacting Concrete has high strength combined with high spread.

Flowable Fill™ has a 28-day strength of only 1.0 to 2.5 MPa.

Firth Thermal Bedding has a 28-day strength of 3 to 10 MPa.

Installation and Maintenance Summary

Firth Specialty Concretes are durable, low maintenance and made from predominantly natural materials. Firth is committed to sustainability in concrete manufacture and distribution, including the recycling of surplus raw materials, water and leftover concrete.
