Work is in progress and results will be published shortly.Firth Certified Concrete® is New Zealand’s largest producer of ready-mix concrete. Firth has more than 60 plants throughout New Zealand and an extensive fleet of trucks and concrete pumps. The Firth RibRaft® system enables efficient construction of insulated concrete floors on levelled ground covered with DPM (damp proof membrane). RibRaft® polystyrene pods, plastic spacers and steel reinforcing fit together simply and are placed directly on the DPM. RaftMix™ Concrete is placed over and between the RibRaft® pods to form the floor.

The RibRaft® system is generally used to form residential floors.
Compared to conventional concrete slab floors, RibRaft® has several key advantages: Improved insulation, Energy efficiency, Increased strength, Reduced spoil, Time and cost savings. RibRaft® floors enable homes constructed with Firth HotBloc® masonry walls to comply with the R-values required in Clause H1, Table 2(b) of the NZBC from 30 September 2008. For details refer to the Firth brochure, "Energy Efficient Masonry Construction".
The Firth RibRaft® system comprises RibRaft® polystyrene pods, plastic spacers and RaftMix™ Concrete. These components as well as reinforcing steel fit together simply and are placed directly on the DPM. RaftMix™ Concrete is an inert material comprising aggregates, sand, cement and water. Aggregates and sand are sourced close to manufacturing locations. Cement is New Zealand made. No toxic preservatives required for preventing rot. Firth is committed to sustainability in concrete manufacture and distribution, including the recycling of surplus raw materials, water and leftover concrete.
RibRaft® is the first floor system to gain Accreditation (or Codemark) from the BIA. The accreditation is for non-specific design, but there are many ways the system can be engineered and constructed. The non-specific detail consists of an 85mm thick top slab supported by a grid of ribs normally 100 mm wide at a maximum spacing of 1200mm x 1200mm centres. The overall depth is 305mm. Edge beams and ribs under load bearing walls are 300mm wide to provide for the extra load carried by these members. Construction is directly on levelled ground covered with DPM (damp proof membrane).
RibRaft® polystyrene waffle pods 1100mm square (or cut to size) and 220mm thick are arranged so that a reinforced concrete floor slab with a grid of reinforced concrete ribs and edge beams is formed when concrete is placed over and between them. Use of RaftMix™ Concrete is recommended. This is a specially formulated, pumpable, 20 MPa mix that flows more readily into the voids between the RibRaft® Pods.
